Richmond New May Wah Supermarket...

How awesome is this store? So damn awesome that it's crammed butt to gut on a weekday afternoon. This place is not for the claustrophobic. I had to slip and slide through crowds of aggressive elder Chinese bargain hunting women with my Puerto Rican booty and kangaroo pouch bumping here and there. Now, it may not be the free-range and organic nirvana many gastronomes and locavores want to participate in, which is fine when you have the money to live that lifestyle. I practice that preach when I'm rollin' in the dough. But, for when I'm living on the stereotypical (and some think mythical) artist's wages - nonexistent - I'm trying to make $5 stretch the length of a week's time. Comprende?

The narrow aisles can get overwhelming if you don't know what you're looking for, or are new to Asian ingredients. The crowds can get overwhelming if you're timid. You have to flail your arms about to get the attention of the butchers, because they will dismiss you like yesterday's food trend. The deals here are worth anything you could possibly encounter. Fresh chicken in pink moist piles for under $1 a pound, fresh duck for under $3 a pound, fresh oysters for $0.50-$1.35 each, Salmon "carcass" bones with some flesh for salmon tartare, chicken feet, soft shell blue crabs and Dungeness for $3 a pound. Florescent candy packages, quirky charicatures, sake, rice wine, oyster sauce, hoisin...am I emphasizing the importance of you getting down to this store?

Get your arse down there, man!
